The Mansion was built in 1856. When Addams opened it, the house was first a kindergarten. It soon expanded to a day nursery and infant care facility. Eventually a secondary college was installed as well as evening classes on civil rights and civics. Through donations, the house opened a gym, social clubs, shops, an orphanage and a playground. One thing that the house was most remembered by was the classes one could take on trades and house skills for immigrants.

"In my opinion, none of the national historical landmarks better signifies the achievements of the past while pointing the way to a brighter future for our cities than does the Hull House."   Dr. Murray H. Nelligan of the National Park Service. (1967)
