Jane Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois
on September 6, 1860. From there she went on to graduate from Rockford College
in 1882. After college she moved to the city of Chicago. She set up house
in the West Side. It was there that she opened her Hull House, with Ellen
Gates Starr. In 1892, Jane Addams became a garbage inspector for the West
Side. 1903 brought Addams to become vice president of National Woman's Trade
Union League. In 1909, Addams helped found the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In 1931, Addams becomes the first
American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Finally in 1935, Jane addams
died in a Cedarville hospital at the age of 75. |
